]]> Technology Sat, 1 Nov 2008 00:07:00 GMT http://fogview.com/index.php?post_id=398729# 00:45:56 g1, android, t-mobile g1, vidblaster, myfogview@gmail.com Clean Comcastic -- This is So Wrong on So Many Levels http://fogview.com/index.php?post_id=372895# The current buzz on the Internet is Comcast's formal policy about capping customer's Internet bandwidth at 250 GB/month (Comcast calls this excessive use). Customers who exceed this monthly bandwidth will get a warning notice and those that exceed it twice within a six month period will have their account canceled and banned from the Comcast service for one year. This policy goes into effect October 1, 2008.

I have heard stories in the past few months about users having their Comcast service suddenly stop, forcing them to call customer service to hear that they exceeded their monthly bandwidth. I'm a Comcast user and have read through my customer agreements and didn't see anything about bandwidth limits. It does state that they can change the "terms of service" but that's it. Frank, who has @ComCastCares on Twitter, says that this policy has been in effect for a while now and Comcast is just making the number public after getting requests from Comcast users. Comcast is also saying that if you haven't received a warning under the current policy, you have nothing to worry about.

Well, I'm worried for the following reasons:

  1. They are telling you that you can't exceed 250 GB/month but don't give you any way to tell what your current usage is. They did give some guidelines about what this limit means but that doesn't cut it in my book. It's like your electrical company saying you can't exceed a certain amount of electricity per month but not telling you how much you consume per month. Instead, they tell you how many lights, TVs, radios, and computers you could use that may exceed the limit. Comcast's answer is to search the Internet for bandwidth meters. I'm sure the general public is going to do this and install some unknown software on their system that has the potential to be a major spyware/virus source.

  2. "If you haven't received a warning under the current policy, don't worry." This doesn't mean that my usage will not change in the future. Content is moving more and more to the Internet. Streaming video, streaming audio, movies, photo sharing all consume lots of bandwidth. Multiply this by the number of people in a household, and I could see you getting close to, or even exceeding the 250 GB cap. It goes back to the first point of Comcast not telling you what's you're consuming.

  3. Is there a conflict of interest here? Who are the users that are consuming high bandwidth? They are the ones who are consuming content on the Internet instead of Television. These users are also using the Internet to replace their telephone service through services like Skype and Vontage. What other services does Comcast offer: Television and Telephone.

  4. The last issue deals with shutting down your service if you exceed the cap. If I exceed the number of cell phone minutes, I get charged for the excess minutes. They don't threaten to shut off my service (or shut it off and force me to call customer service). Comcast has stated that there is no tiered service and users who exceed the cap twice in a six month period, will have their service terminated. What about moving these users to a higher data plan? Maybe they don't want the additional Internet revenue, but instead want to reverse the downward trend in their Television and Telephone business.

In many areas of the country Internet users have very few choices for Internet providers and I'm afraid if Comcast is allowed to continue this policy, it will push back technology explosion we are seeing now. I'm involved in what some are calling "new media" and that would not be possible without the Internet and the ability to consume/deliver high bandwidth content.

If you are not on Comcast you may think this doesn't affect you, but you're wrong. I'm sure other Internet providers are looking at this very closely and will follow suit if Comcast is able to make this stick.

Todd Cochran, of GeekNewsCentral, has called for a Comcast boycott and you should call your Internet provider NOW and let them know this is not acceptable!

  • Half Marathon Run in San Francisco Earlier this month I ran one half of the SF Marathon. I woke up at 3 am and headed to SF for a 6:05 run. Runners were grouped in waves to avoid traffic jams and to control the flow over the Golden Gate Bridge. The run was great and the highlight (as always) is running over the Golden Gate Bridge. Next up is the Silicon Valley Marathon at the end of October.
  • Summer Olympics â pictures Opening ceremonies were great and I was amazed at the technology used: underwater cameras; super imposed images showing world record timing.
  • GoToMeeting Ad (06:45)

  • Running can slow aging process This research study followed a group of 500 runners (starting at age 50) for 20 years and found that running allowed them to live longer and reduced the risk of disease.  The study didnât find any increase in total knee replacements as scientists originally feared.

  • New Media Expo  â review The show was held in Las Vegas this year and some said it was smaller and lacked the excitement of previous shows. I went last year but didnât go this year because I was afraid the show would be lost in the big city and limit the ability to network and see the people that are important to the podcasting community. Leo Laporte did go and did two days of streaming live on TwitLive.TV with great interviews with podcasters.

  • Music: âMy Monkeyâ by Jonathan Coulton Jonathan is know for his song âCode Monkeyâ and was a database programmer before doing his music full-time. He quit his job and set a goal to write one new song a week.

  • Microsoft Hires Seinfeld for Ads Microsoft is losing in the âad warsâ with Apple so itâs going to start itâs own series of ad starting with Jerry Seinfeld. So, is this going to be a commercial about nothing? Seinfeld will team up with Bill Gates in some of the commercials. If they are trying to improve their image, why have Bill in the commercials?

  • iMac Shut Down Problem â update Iâve been having problems with my almost-a-year-old iMac shutting down without warning. It generally happens when Iâm editing in iMovie or in iDVD burning a disk. I took the computer into the local Apple store twice now. They couldnât duplicate the problem but they changed out the power supply and logic board on the last visit. I have my fingers crossed that it fixed the problem. The machine gets so hot and Iâm afraid that is causing the problem. I purchased Apple Care as additional insurance.
  • Tech tip: Get rid of your (old) USB card readers!  Older USB card readers are slow (USB 1.1 vs. 2.0): 12 mb/sec vs 480 mb/sec. (1.5 MB/sec vs. 60 MB/sec). If you are using older USB card readers on a newer computer, youâre wasting a lot of time waiting for your transfers to finish. My suggestion is to get rid of your old USB card readers and purchase a USB 2.0 reader.
  • This Week in Photography TWIPPHOTO.com  This is a great podcast about photography from Alex Lindsay and Scott Bourne. Show #44 has an interview with David Griffin, Director of photography at National Geographic and has some great insights to how they made the switch from film to digital and what they look for in photographers. As a disclaimer, Iâm currently helping out with the show notes for the TWIP podcast.

  • VidBlaster Pro Video Demo (on my website) Mike released Version 0.33, which added 16:9 display. The Home version now includes Streaming and supports up to 2 cameras (with screen capture as one of the camera sources).

Below is the front page of this weekâs Target ad showing the flashed-based Zune device (4 and 8 GB).

Which item would you pick, the Zune (on the left) or the iPod Touch (on the right)? Did you even notice the Zune? (I thought it was the last generation iPod Nano until I took a closer look.)

I know thereâs a $150 price difference between the two but that issue is answered when you turn the page.

This is what you see on the inside page. A nice ad telling you the iPod makes the perfect gift. So whereâs the Zune? If I didnât know better I would think this whole thing was an Apple ad and they included the Zune for comparision purposes.

The Microsoft Zune is so far behind the iPod in Marketing and sales, you would think Microsoft would pay to make a splash for the release of the Zune 2. I bet many wonât even notice the Zune but will notice the iPod Touch on the front page and the new iPod Nano and iPod Classic on the second page.

I paid $250 for my first generation 30 GB Zune over a year ago so Iâve been watching Microsoft and were they were going with the Zune. Where they went was reducing my Zune by $100. They finally released a product that competes with the last generation iPods but I donât expect many buyers to get excited about this device and ads like this doesnât help either. At least they provided the loyal first gen Zune users with a firmware upgrade so they could experience the new Zune 2 user interface.

Before this year Iâve never owned an iPod (or any Apple product for that matter) so I was really hoping Microsoft would make the Zune a success. I recently purchased an iPod Nano and iPod Touch because the Zune just didnât do what I wanted. Time will tell if Microsoft can convince buyers that the Zune 2 is as sexy and cool as the iPod.

Iâve downloaded the new Zune Desktop software and upgraded the firmware in my older Zune and I plan to write up my experiences. Iâve also talked about my initial reaction on my last podcast and will talk more about it soon. Iâll let you know about the new Zune experience and how it compares to the iPod.

I’ve blogged before about Zooomr and the problems it had with the re-launch of Zooomr Mark III but I’m happy to report it’s now up and running. Granted there still are a number of features not yet working (like SmartSets) but the site is stable and users are uploading photos and exploring Zooomr’s new features. Check out the Discovery 100 feature of Zooomr where it shows the best pictures of the past hour, day, week, and year.

To help spread the word Randy Carranza (randyman) has printed up some Zooomr sticker (see above photo) that you can order and paste wherever you like. He has started a Zooomr group (StickerWalking) where users can post photos of their pastings. You can find more information about ordering the Zooomr stickers here.

This was recorded on the Zooomr Ustream.tv feed. At this launch attempt the Zooomr site was only up for 20 minutes before it crashed and burned. The site finally re-launched (the second time) on Saturday, May 2, 2007. Zooomr is running a little slow but Kris Tate and Thomas Hawk are slowly getting out the bugs.

As I’ve been posting before the Zooomr re-launch came and went (crash and burned) and Kristopher Take is in the process of getting it going again. They had a few hardware server problems and Zoho came to the rescue to get Zooomr up and going again. Sun Microsystems also came in with a server box on loan for 60 days. Zoli’s Blog has a great recap of all that has happened over the past 12 days.

The fact that it’s two days since Zoho came to the rescue and Zooomr is not up seems to have upset some people. On top of that the Zooomr Blog seems to have problems because of the Zoomr crash and is not providing timely updates of the status. Dedicated users have been glued to the Zooomr Ustream.tv feed and getting updates directly from Kris and Thomas Hawk. Robert Scoble has also been active in the Zooomr IRC chat room and providing support and status updates whenever he can.

There are a few hardware problems that need to be sorted out and Kris doesn’t want to bring Zooomr up just to have it crash again. He has been working long, long hours and doing his best to make sure when Zooomr comes online, it stays online. We (Zooomr users) are behind Kris and Thomas and support them in getting Zooomr back up when they feels it’s ready to come online.

Kris was able to get the static photos back online so blogs that link to these photos will be able to access their pictures again.

We would like to thank the Internet community and especially Zoho and Sun Microsystems for coming forward and lending a big helping hand.

Zooomr will live again!

Tonight (May 29) at 11:15 PM, Zooomr Mark III launched and everyone in the Zooomr Ustream.TV chat room rushed onto the site and started posting what they found. Twenty minutes late it went down as fast as it went up. Zooomr had lost a data base server and had to be taken off line.

For those who donât know Zooomr is a photo sharing site similar to Flickr and has been down for the past week being overhauled with over 250 new features. The lead (and only) programmer, Kristopher Tate, has been working night and day on this venture and tonight was a major defeat in Zooomrâs launch.

While the site was up everyone was excited by what they saw. Reading the posts in the chat room reminded me of kids running to be the first on the rides at Disneyland after they opened the gates. For many of us itâs been a weekâs wait watching Kristopher and Thomas Hawk broadcast the ups and downs of this launch live over Ustream.tv. Hanging out in the chat room and getting to know Kristopher and Thomas felt like family and everyone was enjoying being part of it all.

Even before the launch actually happened, Robert Scoble wrote a post about Zooomr asking for others to help this startup survive.

After the launch I was going to title this post âDid Ustream Save Zooomr,â? but even though that may be true, I donât think Ustream can fix this. What can you do to help?

This is an update to Zooomr.com that has been 9 months in the making and adds over 250 new features, improvements, and refinements. It adds a social element as well as the ability for photographers to sell their photos as stock.

Zooomr is a photo sharing site similar to Flickr. Users can create an account and upload their photos for all the world to view and share. The site was created by one programmer, Kristopher Tate (CTO) and has been highly promoted by Thomas Hawk, who is also the CEO of Zoomr.

For the past two days Kristopher and Thomas have been live on Ustream.tv talking about the launch and answering questions about Zooomr Mark III and photography via the UStream chat box. They plan to stay live until Zooomr launches (ETA is this afternoon).

To my knowledge this is the first time a web site has launched (or relaunched in the case of Zooomr) live. The launch also was written up on TechCrunch.

The “meta” picture was taken with my Nikon D40 after asking Thomas for a picture shot.

Dave Winer mentioned on Scripting News that he was the proud owner (my words) of a Microsoft Zune. He said it was Microsoft’s gift to those who spoke at the MIX07 conference held in Las Vegas earlier this week.

Dave was having problems syncing the Zune to his Mac (running Windows using Parallels) and figuring out how to download podcasts to the Zune. I left a comment on his blog about how I download podcasts to my Zune and thought I would repeat the information here since others may have the same problem or curious about how its done.

The Microsoft Zune desktop software doesn’t support podcasts directly (but it is listed as a genre), so you will need an external podcast reader (podcatcher) like Juice or iTunes to retrieve your favorite podcast shows. I use Juice as my podcatcher which downloads podcasts to separate folders for each podcast. After the podcasts are on my computer the Zune desktop will sync them up to the Zune device using “watch” folders. I don’t automatically have the Zune software watch all the podcast show folders because sometimes I listen to them on my desktop and don’t want them on the Zune.

To sync the podcasts up with the Zune I’ve created a Zune folder under My Documents with three subfolders: Pictures, Videos, and Podcasts. I’ve set the Zune desktop software to watch those folders so anything that gets placed in the folders are automatically synced to the Zune. Some of the downloaded podcasts go directly to my Zune Podcast folder and other shows I manually move to the folders. The next time the Zune is connected to the desktop it will automatically download any new files it finds in the watched folders and remove any files from the Zune that have been removed from the watched folders.

Other things you need to remember:
1) You can’t delete the podcasts on the Zune but must manually delete (or remove) them from the “watched” folders. It has no concept of what’s been played and what can be deleted. (I generally listen to all the podcasts on my Zune before resyncing to the PC so I can safely delete everything in the Zune Podcast directory.)

2) Use the genre: Podcast on the Zune to find the downloaded podcasts and select “play all.” This only works if the MP3 ID3 tags has the word “podcast” in the genre field. I find most podcasts do but some don’t and it may list those shows under Unknown genre.

3) When you first install the Zune software it automatically checks the My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos directories on your computer and transfers any existing media you may have. This may take a while if computer is loaded with lots of media files. (You can disable this — see below.)

You can access the Zune desktop software “watched” folders list with: Options->Library-Monitor Folders

A question that keeps coming up about the Zune is what happens if you can’t listen to a podcast completely? When you turn the Zune back on does it continue where you left off or does it start from the beginning? The answer is yes and no. Most of the time you can pause and turn off the player and continue later where you left off. There are two exceptions to this: 1) If the battery drains completely while it’s off (wi-fi and FM radio can cause a drain), and 2) After the Zune has been sitting idle for a few days the Zune seems to go through a reset and loses the knowledge of what it was previously doing (even with a fully charged battery). It doesn’t lose any of the media, only what was played.

A number of listeners to my podcast have been emailing me and asking about the freeway collapse we had in the San Francisco Bay Area last Sunday (April 29, 2007). I thought I would write about it here for those who are interested.

Around 3:30 AM Sunday a gasoline truck crashed into a guard rail and overturned on the 880 freeway near the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The truck burst into flames and the fire was so hot it melted the 580 freeway structure that crosses the 880 freeway, causing it to collapse. Luckily the truck driver was able to get out of his truck in time and hailed a taxi cab who took him to a local hospital. He survived with only 2nd degree burns. No one else was injured. (See video and pictures of the collapse here.)

The freeway collapse was a major news story (and still is). I'm amazed how hot the fire got to melt the structure. The section of freeway affected is near the entrance to the San Francisco Bay bridge from the Oakland/Berkeley side of the bay (called the East Bay). It mainly affects people who work in San Francisco. Commuters can cross the Bay Bridge going into San Francisco but coming home they will need to exit the bridge and take Oakland city surface streets to by-pass the collapsed section. It will be a major traffic issue for months to come. I live in the outskirts of the Bay Area and don’t travel to San Francisco very often so this collapse doesn’t directly affect me.

As you can imagine it really affects traffic in the Bay Area. It mainly affect people who live in the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, etc.) and work in San Francisco. With the section of the freeway gone commuters have other alternatives (other freeways and city streets) but in watching the news coverage over the past four days you would think the entire Bay Area freeway system had collapsed.

All the Bay Area radio and TV news stations have extended coverage of this event. Reporters are out in traffic; near the site of the collapsed freeway; and riding mass transit (BART). On Monday most commuters stayed home so I think the reporters were the only ones in the traffic. One TV station had an airplane; news vans; and reporters on the side of the freeway near the freeway collapse and showing how bad drivers were acting slowing down to view the collapse and causing a major traffic jam. Maybe the news crew was the REAL cause of slowdown.

I know this is major news story but when news stations only talk about this one story and run extended coverage (starting at 4 AM), something is wrong. I would love to have Dave Winer’s Checkbox News so I could opt out of this “news event” after four days. I’m tired of hearing extended coverage about commuters coping with the change and the lack of a major traffic backup.

A quick update: After four days the collapsed freeway has been removed and the inspection of remaining structure begins. Current cost: 9 billion million dollars! There is no estimate when the reconstruction will be finished but there is now talk of a shortage of steel needed to rebuild the structure.

I clicked on the URL and found myself smiling at what Jason wrote. He lists the things you need to do for him to link to your post. I’m not sure he’s serious about everything in his list but I figured he did it to see how many people would write about him and link back to his site. This is an interesting social experiment and I’m sure he will get lots of takers (I’m guess I’m one of them).

Jason has been around for a while (co-founder of Weblogs Inc; VP at AOL) but I started reading his blog and following him on Twitter when I heard him on the Gillmor Gang podcast doing a great imitation of Adam Curry. He also has been talking about Fatblogging and exercising to get his weight down so he can run a marathon. Since I’m a runner that caught my interest. You can read about Jason here.

I find I get a lot of great links from Twitter (like the one from Jason). I follow a number of interesting people on the Web and Twitter helps not only answering the question “What are you doing now?”, but more important, “What do you find interesting now?”.

I do have one concern that I haven’t seen raised before about Twitter and that’s clicking on unknown links. Twitter limits the text to 140 characters (because of SMS text message limits) so most URLs are converted to the “tinyurl” format to save space. As you can see in Jason tweet the URL destination is hidden and you don’t know where it’s going until you’re there — very dangerous (for Window users). I guess it’s a matter of trusting who you’re following and hope nobody hacks their account and starts posting dangerous URLs.

I had an Expo ticket but was to busy to attend but thanks to the Internet and Ustream.tv I was able to feel the excitement and the maybe view the future of new media.

Ustream.tv is the latest Internet craze (following Justin.tv and 24/7 video). What surprises me most is I didn’t hear of it from Leo Laporte (the “joiner”) but from others on Twitter: Chris Pirillo, Robert Scoble, and Jeremiah Owyang. Chris has been playing with Ustream for a few weeks while Robert and Jeremiah work for Podtech and have been streaming video from the Web 2.0 conference for the past few days. I think it’s been an interesting experiment for all involved and watching the stream. The ability to interact through the chatroom makes it a wonderful two-way media experience.

Today all three (along with Thomas Hawk) were on a Web 2.0 panel and each one (except Thomas) were streaming the event from their web cam. The quality is not the best because each was using a wireless Internet connection (Sprint EVDO, Cingular Edge) so at times the video would freeze or the audio would drop.

I was able to capture 15 minutes of the session with all three web feeds and I posted it below and on my account on blip.tv. The quality is not the best but this may be the future. Robert Scoble used a Logitech Notebook USB cam mounted on his hat. Jeremiah used the same Logitech cam mounted on a tripod from the audience. Chris used a hand held (MiniDV?) cam (just two words Chris: white balance).

 Check it out and maybe you’ll create your own streaming video.

It focuses on unpacking the device and using it for the first time. I will cover the Zune software installation in another post and on an upcoming podcast.

My Zune Experience
Tuesday I woke up early and headed to Target to wait in line for the Microsoft Zune player. (I figured if there was going to be a line my Target store would be out of the way and not have a long line.) I was running a little late and arrived five minutes after 8 AM and found the parking lot pretty empty. I walked in the store and only saw two other customers and an empty electronics counter. I asked if they had any Zunes and he had one in his hand for another customer and two more under the counter. It turns out this Target store only received eight white Zunes and they only had two left when I entered the store (5 minutes after they opened). I asked if they sold the five units before I arrived and never got a clear answer (maybe some Target employees are "happy" owners of a white Zune). From what I could tell there was never a line for the Zune but I'm sure others will be disappointed if they go in to pick up their own unit later.

I took my Zume home to see for myself what the company from Redmond was shipping. Before I describe what I found let me tell you that I'm not an iPod user and that I use an iRiver MP3 player for my music and podcasts. I'm also a Windows XP user which is a good thing because it's one of the requirements mentioned on the Zune package (no support for the Apple Mac).

I unpacked the unit and you can find my pictures here. The Zune was packaged in a nice cardboard box without any sign of the heavy plastic packaging that is so much the norm these days. Two things stood out as I unpacked the box. 1) There was no AC adapter and 2) No user manual. There was a Start guide that basically told you to insert the enclosed CD in a Windows XP machine and described the simple controls on the Zune. The Zune charges its internal battery using the supplied USB sync cable (an AC adapter can be purchased if you need to recharge the Zune and you don't have access to a computer with a USB port).

I didn't have a chance to install the Zune software because I was working on an important project and wanted to wait until I finished before installing software that I heard could cause problems. The following are  my observations from using the device right out of the box.

Physically, the Zune is about the same size as a Video iPod with a larger screen. The Zune feels solid in my hand and looks like it's enclosed in a plastic case (which you can't open). The plastic case protects the Zune but I'm concerned about the control pad which looks like the scroll wheel on the iPod but is really five buttons that controls volume and media forward/rewind. There is a small gap around the round control pad that looks like it could trap food, dirt and other stuff. Time will tell if this is a problem.

Here is what you find on the Zune case:
Top: Lock button and 3.5 mm headphone jack
Front: Back button, Pause/Play button, Control Pad with volume up/down, forward/reverse, and OK (center)
Bottom: USB sync connector (power and computer sync)
Back: "Hello From Seattle," "Assembled in China," model number (1090) and serial number. I did not find "Microsoft" anywhere on the device.

One note about the battery -- there is no way to open the Zune which means the battery is not user replaceable. This means after two or three years (depending on use) the battery could fail to hold a charge and you will need to buy something new.

Start me up
Pressing any button powers up the Zune (the Start guide says you press the pause/play button for 3 seconds to turn it on). The home menu allows you to select music, videos, pictures, radio, and settings. I selected music and found 11 sample songs to choose from. I plugged in my own headphones (I don't do well with earbuds) and the music was loud and clear. When a song is played album art is displayed along with information about the song. Also displayed is a time line with the elapsed time and total time. A battery icon in the lower right corner indicates how much battery life remains. After a minute the display goes dark (to conserve the battery) but the music continues to play. Pressing any key brings it back. I later found that the display time is settable in the "settings" menu under "display->backlight." The default is 1 minute but can be changed from 1 second to always on. What is strange is calling this "backlight" because when it goes off the display goes completely dark. I'm use to Microsoft PDAs where the screen display is still readable when the backlight is off. This is not what I expected but I'm sure other (non-engineers) would not even question this.

The main reason I was interested in the Zune was video. The Zune comes with 15 sample videos which gives you a good idea of what's possible. Up until now the Zune displays everything in portrait mode but when you start a video the display switches to landscape. What's nice is the control pad also switches so when you rotate the Zune to watch the video the up and down control pad still controls the volume and left and right control pads controls the forward/rewind functions. The video is displayed full screen and when you press the pause key the time line is displayed with the elapsed/remaining times. The back button backs you up one menu level or back to the main menu if you press and hold the button.

The Zune comes with 28 sample pictures that you can view one-by-one or as a slide show. You can also make one of the pictures the background image that is displayed whenever you are not listening to music; viewing a video; or looking at pictures.

The radio function was interesting for a couple reasons. The display is like a radio dial and can display radio station information (call letters and information about the song being played) if the radio station is sending it out over a subcarrier (I found a number of stations here in the San Francisco area that supported that feature). The Zune uses the headphone wires as an FM antenna so for weaker stations it was sensitive to how the wire was positioned. Looking at the settings I found you could select North America, Europe, and Japan which is great for international travelers.

I thought it was odd that this is Hardware version 2.0 when the unit was just released. There are rumors that the Zune is made by Toshiba so this could be the second generation of the Toshiba hardware (with new software supplied by Microsoft).

Documentation
As I mentioned before there was very little document included with the Zune. That was a Start, Product Guide, and a postcard with the download code for the "14 day free trial of a Zune Pass." The Product Guide is really a safety and warranty guide and gives very little information about the Zune. The only value to the Start guide is the last page that describes the location and function of the buttons.

In the descriptions of the Zune functions it mentions how to reset the device (press and hold the back button while pressing up on the control pad). I thought it was odd that it was given such high importance but based on my experiences with Microsoft WinCE and Pocket PCs maybe they expect the user to need this when all seems dead. (It also raises the question about what embedded OS is driving the Zune -- WinCE?)

I went to the Zune website and found a place to download manuals but they were PDFs of what I already had. From what I can tell the User Manual in on the Zune.net website. That is where you find a troubleshooting guide and the accessories available. It also gives you information about the Zune Marketplace (for music) and Microsoft Points that you use to purchase music. (I'll have more on that in a future post.)

Summary
The Zune looks to be a nice device with support for the three things I'm looking for in a portable device: music player, video player, and a place to show off some pictures. The fact that it has a radio that displays radio station information (good when visiting new cities) and can be set for international travel, is an added bonus.

I now need to now install the software and look at how that integrates with the Zune and if it gets in the way (more on that in a moment).

What I don't like about the Zune is the lack of Macintosh support (currently it only supports Windows XP SP2 and newer). That seems like a slap in the face to Apple users. (I seem to recall that when the iPod was first released it didn't have Windows support.)

I also don't care for DRM (Digital Rights Management) and at this point in time I don't plan to place any DRM media on my device. I don't believe I'm part of Microsoft's target audience for the Zune because of my age (baby boomer) and that I want to fill the Zune up with my own non-DRM media: podcasts, my music CDs, podsafe music, and videos I create or download (legally).

What I would really like (but not expecting) is a Zune-like device that looks like a storage drive that I can plug into any computer and transfer whatever I want (and have it playable on the Zune).

So far I would keep the device if I'm able to add my own content and DRM doesn't get in the way. I've heard rumors that I may run into problems so I'm going to try it and I'll let you know how it works out. (I purchased the Zune at Target because they do have a 90 day no-questions-asked return policy but I do plan to keep the Zune if all goes well.)

After I install the Zune software I'll update this review and create a podcast talking about my experiences. Stay tuned.

It's a site that bloggers can sign up for and get paid for writing reviews. You submit your blog and if you're accepted they email you offers from advertisers to review their site or product for a fee (the fee is determine by your blog traffic). What I like about the idea is they don't require you to write a positive review and they do require that you disclose that you are getting paid to write the review. You can also refuse to review a product if you don't feel like doing the review.

There has been a lot of talk about other sites that paid bloggers to write reviews but don't require them to disclose that they are being paid for the reivew. I like the fact that this site is different.

Advertisers can go to the site and enter tags and get a list of blogs that would be proper for their product. They can also see the cost and pick the site(s) they feel would best hit their target audience.

After I signed up for the service the first review I signed up to do was their own site (ReviewMe). So here is the disclaimer that this review is being paid for by ReviewMe. I think it's a smart idea because it helps spread the word about the site.

I don't have any history beyond looking at the website and signing up to do reviews so I'll let you know how it works out. I also promise to disclose if I'm getting paid to write about something you read or hear from me.

The RavMon.exe virus came from a Windows machine used to manufacturer the iPods.

 On the Apple website they stated:
"As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it."

The idea that Apple is using a Windows machine in production raises an interesting question: Why? Is it being used to validate that the iPods worked on a Windows machine or is it a better machine to test and program the iPods? (Maybe it's a money issue and they needed a machine that didn't cost an arm and a leg.)

I wonder if Bill Gates has "hardy" on his wish list for the upcoming Windows Vista? I'm thinking about buying an MacBook but I wish the MacBook was more "hardy" and didn't overheat and shutdown. I also wish Apple was more "hardy" and fessed up to the problem.

Tonight I saw the Apple commercial with the Mac and PC guys. I expect in the next commercial the Mac guy will be begging the PC guy for help with virus and spyware protection.

* Both companies are profitable and have very long futures ahead of them.

I'm a Windows XP user and have never used a Mac but after all the security issues I see on Windows I see myself thinking about the Mac more and more. I'm getting more into media and I know the Mac OS handles that must better than Windows.

2. Jack and others also pointed out that there is a problems leaving comments on this site if you're using the Firefox browser (ver. 1.5). I've contacted Libsyn (the host of this site) and they are aware of the problem but don't have a solution yet.

It's been a while since I've done a podcast or even a blog post. I've been busy with work, vacation, and more work. This past weekend I attended the "geek fest" called Gnomedex in Seattle. I had a great time and plan to share a summary of the conference and my thoughts and views in upcoming blogs and podcasts.

An interesting speaker that did make the front page of the Seattle PI newspaper was Senator John Edwards. He had some interesting things to say on both politics and technology. The Senator claims he came to listen to us and educate himself about issues surounding the internet. Stay tuned.

I mentioned in my last podcast that we had some strange weather here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The picture on the right is Mt. Diablo and was taken from my bedroom Monday morning. I know snow is not rare in the winter time but it is around here. Over the weekend they had snow on the Santa Cruz beach which I've never heard of before.

Adam Curry played my audio feedback on this Daily Source Code #353. I sent him feedback about the Podshow Music Network. He played the audio clip near the end of his show (49:46).

Speaking of Podshow, it sounds like they are getting ready to open the network for businesss and let podcasters and listeners into the network. This should happen next week and I hope they enable the purchasing of songs too (typicaly 99 cents and no DRM).
